Dayveon (Devin Blackmon) is a young black teenager growing up in rural Arkansas, dealing with the death of the older brother he idolised. Dayveon spends a sweltering summer listlessly moping around, before he is drawn in by the comradery and aggression of a local gang. Dayveon credits David Gordon Green (director of Stronger) as Executive Producer, and bears comparison to Green’s seminal George Washington (2000), while Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning Moonlight (2016) is another point of reference. Great company to be in, though Dayveon asserts itself as more than homage, emerging as an assured, striking debut feature which marks Amman Abbasi’s arrival as a major talent.
