The Gate Cinema

Documentary | Journey

The subject for Chico Pereira’s beautifully observed, tender documentary is his uncle Manolo, a 73-year-old Andalusian with chronic arthritis, a history of heart attacks and no English. His most treasured companion is a donkey called Gorrión (‘Sparrow’). He loves to commune with nature, and harbours a burning ambition: to travel the brutal 2200 mile Trail of Tears, the route used when Cherokee Indians were forcibly removed from their ancestral homelands in the Southeastern United States. Ignoring doctor’s advice and the concern of his family, Manolo stubbornly makes plans to fulfil his dream, determined that Gorrión will join him on the adventure.
