British primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall acquired fame, and some notoriety, when she embarked on pioneering work with chimpanzees in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park during the 1960s. National Geographic sent photographer and filmmaker Hugo van Lawick to document the primates and Goodall’s activities. He shot over 140 hours of 16mm footage that was stored in an archive for decades. Unearthed and presented by filmmaker Brett Morgen (Cobain: Montage of Heck (2015), The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002)) that precious footage now forms the basis for this remarkable documentary, Goodall herself eloquently and openly describes her experiences in a new interview and there is a score by Philip Glass.
