The Syrian Civil Defence’s White Helmets are an organisation comprised if ordinary citizens, volunteers who are on the frontline of the conflict in the country’s decimated capital. They are the first to rush towards air strike, dragging bodies from destroyed buildings, desperate to save lives. Winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival, this visceral, vital documentary confronts the fresh hell of war the White Helmets endure while drawing viewers into the lives of three of the organisations founders. Khaled, Subhi, and Mahmou dismiss notions of heroism, rally each other amidst the chaos and struggle with the dilemma of whether flee or stay their ravaged home.
