The Gate Cinema

Drama | Europe | Political

The marriage of Moscow couple Boris (Alexey Rozin), and Zhenya (Maryana Spivak) is at an end. They are at a stage where they are unable to find kind words to say to each other and both have moved on to new love affairs. While they prepare for inevitable divorce, they continue to rub each other up the wrong way in a cramped apartment, which is hellish for their introverted 12-year-old son Alyosha (Matvey Novikov). Fateful events fail to dilute the contempt Boris and Zhenya show each other. Continuing to prove himself as one of the most fearless and intelligent filmmakers working today, Andrei Zvyagintsev follows his award-winning state-of-the-nation address Leviathan with this ferocious damning of a world consumed by selfish aspiration.
