The Gate Cinema

Documentary | Morality | Political | China

We are introduced to Mrs. Fang in 2015 at her home in a village in Southern China. She is a fragile looking Chinese woman in her 60s, pottering in a hallway. Cut to some months later, and Alzheimer’s has caused her to be bedridden, reduced to mere skin and bone. Her adult son and daughter, along with other neighbours and relatives, come in and out of her room, chattering or looking at their phones, waiting for her to die. An emotionally charged film that provokes searing questions about the end of life, Wang Bing’s unflinching, haunting documentary won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival this year.
