Where it took David Simon’s groundbreaking TV series The Wire (2002-2008) five seasons to essay much of the ills of contemporary America, Theo Anthony succeeds in this documentary feature. Also focusing on Baltimore, this dazzlingly brilliant and fragmentary debut freewheels through several threads including dispassionate analysis of the role played by town planning to the shrewd observations of municipal vermin exterminator Harold Edmond to present a sensationally thought provoking film. This is filmmaking at its most intoxicating in service of a thesis that is ultimately sobering.
