Drama | Historical | Morality | Political | Faith

When her sister dies, elderly Christina (Maj Doris Rimpi) is persuaded to travel to Lapland for the funeral, accompanied by her son and granddaughter. While her descendants revel in learning about their Sami heritage, Christina grows increasingly uncomfortable and agitated. The reluctant homecoming has stirred painful memories of her troubled pastoral childhood when her name was Elle-Marja and the prejudice and cruelty she faced growing up in the 1930s are revisited in flash back. The elegant, stirring debut feature from Amanda Kernell highlights the discrimination the Sami people have historically endured and features a breath-taking, precocious performance from newcomer Lene Cecilia Sparrok.
