Rightly revered as one of the great exponents of German expressionism, Fritz Lang was less appreciated at the time he was entering the twilight of his career. Even so, he turned in one of the incendiary film noirs with The Big Heat. Better known for playing everyman characters, Glenn Ford is excellent as the implacable cop-turned-avenging-angel who sets his focus on local crime lord Mike Lagana. Lee Marvin is rattlesnake mean as his lieutenant, while Gloria Grahame is equal parts world weary and vivacious as the beguiling gangster’s moll.
