The Everyman Theatre

Comedy | Drama | Art | Masculinity

Ruben Östlund’s Palm d’Or winning film is a deliciously funny and disarmingly unsettling satire which relishes depicting the hypocrisy and pretensions in the art world, though it is ultimately a biting commentary on the state of modern masculinity, a subject which has informed Östlund’s previous celebrated features, Play (2011) and Force Majeure (2014). Christian (Claes Bang) is a curator of a contemporary art museum preparing for a major installation titled The Square, His reaction to being pick pocketed begins a spiralling descent into a dramatic existential crisis. Bang is brilliant as the questionable antihero of the piece, and there are impressive supporting turns from Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West and a monkey.
