This complex, engrossing story set in rural South Africa depicts fallout from an initiation ritual for adolescent boys in the Xhosa community which involves a brutal circumcision procedure and a healing retreat in the wilderness. Xolani (Nakhane Touré) is someone who takes on the responsibility of mentoring the youngsters through the process, though he has an agenda of his own, and when he’s assigned to arrogant city boy Kwanda (Niza Jay Ncoyini), his secrets become harder to keep. Boldly taking on issues of masculinity, sexuality and tradition, John Trengove’s remarkable debut feature is a coming-of-age story like no other.
