The Gate Cinema

Historical | Europe | Morality | Drama | Comedy

East Berlin, 1989, shortly before the fall of the wall. Family and comrades are gathering o celebrate the 90th birthday of Wilhelm Powileit (Bruno Ganz), a veteran Communist who is due another medal for his services to the Party. As generations mingle, apparatchiks fuss and chatter, vodka flows and family secrets are spilled, the claustrophobic celebration becomes a blatant metaphor for a splintering society. Ganz delivers one of his finest performances at the centre of this lyrical, elegiac ensemble drama, a battered patriarch unable to come to terms with the changing world around him.
