Pascale Lamche’s vital film a affords Winnie Mandela a right-to-reply to those who would see her written out of history. Given the courage and conviction she displayed during the apartheid era In South Africa, it is something of a scandal that she needs one, though her fall from grace after Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990 was dramatic and spectacular, to the extent that she was denied access to the VIP area when her then estranged husband was declared president of the country in 1994. With vivid archive footage, revealing interviews with those who were closest to her and testimony from those who sought to destroy her, Lamche delivers a complex portrait of a radical female politician who remains unbowed.
