Barbara Rubin and the Exploding NY Underground
- This event has passed.
Eighteen-year-old Barbara Rubin appeared on the New York underground scene with the groundbreaking experimental film Christmas On Earth (1963), a controversial ‘study in genital differentiation and psychic tumult’, screened using two projectors, coloured gels and whatever was on AM rock radio at the time. A determined visionary, Rubin worked closely with Jonas Mekas, introduced Andy Warhol to The Velvet Underground, and influenced both Bob Dylan and Allen Ginsberg. Then, as suddenly as she had appeared, Rubin vanished from the art scene, seldom seen until after her untimely death in 1980. Chuck Smith’s film brings Rubin back into the spotlight.
