Zain is a 12-year-old boy growing up in desperate conditions in Beirut. Feeling aggrieved and hopeless, he brings his parents to court. Asked by the judge why they should be charged, Zain gives the heartbreaking reply, ‘for giving me life’. Capernaum compassionately takes on the issue of child poverty and confirms Nadine Labaki as one of the most vital directors working anywhere in the world today. There are striking performances from the young actors involved and the film emerges as a powerful and angry critique of the broken system which denies individuals basic dignity and limits them to wretched circumstances. Cork Film Festival is proud and delighted to present this urgent and important film as our Closing Night Gala.

“Earning a 15-minute standing ovation at Cannes, Nadine Labaki’s drama is an Oscar frontrunner for Best Foreign Language Film.”
