The latest film from award-winning Thai iconoclast Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit (36, Mary is Happy, Mary is Happy) is a compendium of stories about the last day in people’s lives. Taking his cue from snatched newspaper headlines and combining documentary techniques within a non-narrative structure, the filmmaker imagines the final hours of his protagonists, which are joyful, celebratory or mundane. As the film points out the statistically random nature of death, none of these characters seem ready to leave this world, though it’s never dour or doom-laden, as sweet melancholy and philosophical reflectiveness trump any sadness or angst.
