This wistful, achingly romantic period piece depicts a love triangle developing in Leningrad’s underground rock scene of the 1980s. Based on Natalya Naumenko’s memoirs and informed by the director’s own experiences, it’s a film that radiates rare authority and invigorating passion, a noble acknowledgement of how hard pre-Perestroika kids had to work to hear rock ’n’ roll. Mostly presented in black and white and with some alluring analogue fetishism, Leto is a musical, of sorts, featuring animated (in every definition of the word) renditions of some glam and punk classics. Serebrennikov’s film captures the thrill of being young and falling in love with music.
