The Street
- This event has passed.
A film about love and loss, and a community unravelled by gentrification.
Hoxton Street has long been a stronghold of working-class East London – a tight-knit community lined with family-run establishments, many of which have been in existence for over a century. But as property prices reach unprecedented levels, a wave of gentrification and development has quickly turned the area into a middle-class sanctuary, with local businesses closing and becoming generic hipster haunts, inciting anger in local residents, adding to the class gap, and pushing populist viewpoints to the fore. Filmed over 4 years, ‘The Street’ is a revealing, moving and universal portrait of 21st-century capitalism and austerity, directly addressing our current preoccupation with Brexit and relating to the concurrent concerns about gentrification in our own country.
