Almayer's Folly (La folie Almayer)
An adaptation of the first novel by Joseph Conrad, Almayer's Folly tells a story of Dutch trader Kaspar Almayer who marries a local girl out of greed on the Bornean outpost of Dutch colonies. More than just a depiction of personal tragedy and madness, the novel and, to even bigger extent Ackerman’s adaptation, are a harsh critique of European colonialist history.
Beautiful, haunting images and excellent performances by Stanislas Merhar and Aurora Marion mark this lesser known masterpiece by Belgian director Chantal Akerman. AK
