To complement Amy Scot’s wonderful documentary Hal, we’re delighted to be presenting one of Hal Ashby’s most celebrated works, and the last film in his run of 1970s classics: Being There. Featuring the great Peter Sellers giving arguably his best performance as a simple-minded gardener educated only by what he has seen on TV, the film traces his journey from homelessness to the upper echelons of US society. Gaining tremendous critical acclaim upon release, the film went on to score an Oscar® nomination for Sellers, plus a Best Supporting Actor win for Melvyn Douglas and his portrayal of billionaire Ben Rand.
