Black Mambas
In Kruger National Park in South Africa in 2013 a unit of all-female anti-poaching specialists is founded. This unit is the titular Black Mambas and Lena Karbe’s committed debut feature documentary focuses upon three of its members: Naledi, Qolile and Nkateko. What at first seems like a straightforward film about concerted new environmental protection within South Africa gradually becomes a revelatory documentary asking uncomfortable questions about the colonial power structures and institutional racism which still prevail within the women’s everyday working environment.
