In a small shop in New York’s Greenwich Village, craftsman Rick Kelly builds custom-made guitars, ably assisted by his apprentice Cindy Hulej and mother Dorothy. What is unique about the guitars in Rick’s shop is that they are crafted using wood reclaimed from some of New York’s most historic buildings and locations, bringing the sound of the city to the instruments themselves. Over five days, director Ron Mann documents the shop and its customers, among them Bill Frisell, Jim Jarmusch and Wilco’s Nels Cline, who all take great delight in sampling Kelly’s wares, and highlights a New York that is rapidly disappearing.
