Based on the true story of the eponymous twentieth-century French novelist, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (Keira Knightley) is transplanted from her rural childhood home to the glittering salons of belle époque Paris after marrying Willy (Dominic West), a successful Parisian writer. Colette agrees to ghostwrite for Willy, creating the sensational best-selling ‘Claudine’ novels, and launching Willy to superstardom. But as Colette reclaims her authorial ownership, her exploration of identity and sexuality defies both her husband and society, influencing literature and sexual expression for generations to come. Transgressive and witty, Colette blends sex appeal, humour and humanity in a chronicle of female empowerment that feels both fresh and timely.
