In 2015, a group of the city’s cops put their careers at risk when they sued New York City and its police department. The case concerned illegal arrest quotas the NYPD insisted didn’t exist, yet evidence suggests these black and Latino officers were being consistently subjected to immense pressure, forced to arrest and imprison people who, in most cases, would look like them. Those arrested would spend months in prison before having their cases dismissed due to lack of evidence. With unprecedented access to the courageous participants in the lawsuit and featuring a memorable private investigator, Crime + Punishment is one of the most searing documentaries of the year.
