Portugal’s soccer hero, the big-hearted but air-headed Diamantino (Carloto Cotta), suffers a crisis of confidence following his first ever first-hand encounter with refugees. This results in the gigantic fluffy puppies who help him score goals deserting him during the World Cup Final, with the ensuing tearful breakdown bringing his career to a grinding halt. In what can only be described as the most delightfully lovable, over-the-top, anti-fascist, pro-EU fairytale you will see this year, directors Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt have succeeded in creating a film that is unbelievably fantastic whilst remaining incredibly relevant in twenty-first-century Europe.
