Demonstrating a keen interest in the intersections between institutions and individuals, Antoine Bourges follows a young caseworker in his feature debut. Beginning with her professional environment, the focus turns to her dealings with Eric, a young man with mental health issues who is appearing in court charged with theft. Bourges’ minimalist technique of using long, fixed-camera takes brings a documentary-like sensibility to the film, his use of non-actors adding a deeper layer of verisimilitude. Thanks to his dispassionate eye, Bourges gives an even-handed – if not empathetic – view of both sides, but most admirable is his commitment to those who fall through the cracks.

Accompanied by a screening of the short film ‘Scaffold’ (15 mins).
