Hal Ashby was the film director that Hollywood needed but didn’t particularly want. A loose cannon whose drug taking and long-haired hippie looks stood him far apart from the Hollywood old guard, he nevertheless had a run of classic films in the 1970s, including Oscar®-winners Shampoo (1975), Coming Home (1978) and Being There (1979). In a world of increasingly violent cinema, Ashby’s works were often a voice for the outsiders, possessing a vulnerability rarely seen elsewhere on the screen, but ever hopeful. Amy Scott’s heartfelt documentary seeks to highlight the often-overlooked career of this great, beautiful man.
To complement this wonderful documentary, we’re delighted to be presenting one of Hal Ashby’s most celebrated works, and the last film in his run of 1970s classics: Being There on 11/11/2018 at 15:00
