Photographer and filmmaker RaMell Ross presents an intimate and occasionally heartbreaking depiction of the Southern African American experience. Shot over five years and crediting the acclaimed Thai auteur Apichatpong Weerasethakul as creative adviser, the film is composed of captured moments of people in a community, while the stories of Daniel, a student at the historically black Bible college Selma University, and Quincy, a father and husband, are gradually expanded on. There’s little hand wringing or fist waving here; the drama is subtle, plaintive and the casual beauty is striking. Hale County This Morning, This Evening is an exquisite, rare non-fiction work that takes the breath away.
