This screening contains flashing images that may affect certain viewers
It has been a decade since we last presented a film by master Austrian experimentalist Siegfried A. Fruhauf, but we are honoured to screen his latest exceptional offering. But please note, Cave Painting contains flashing images that may affect certain viewers. So we follow with the exquisitely soothing animation, Somni.
Roxana Stroe’s A Night in Tokoriki (CIFF2016) was high camp, Balkan disco energy meets rural wedding. That zestfulness is brought to Appalachia’s tale of star-crossed lovers.
In the Cannes-premiering Indonesian film Basri & Salma in a Never-Ending Comedy the lurid colour scheme and laugh-out-loud comedy are deftly balanced with darker moments.
Sisters Michelle and Noel Keserwany are clearly a talented pair. Co-directors of Les Chenilles, Noel also plays lead, while writer Michelle first announced herself as the co-writer of Nadine Labaki’s Capernaum (CIFF2018). The Golden Bear award at Berlinale is well merited for this layered meditation on migration and displacement.

The sun sets and the eyes are closing. Rocking from one green leaf to the next, the little monkey glides gently to sleep. Suddenly the world of dreams gets darker, more colorful and wild. Mysterious plants, creatures and shapes line the trajectory through the night. Somni is a cinematic lullaby.
