From Japanese auteur Shin’ya Tsukamoto (Tetsuo: The Iron Man) comes a tale of a masterless samurai in mid-19th-century Japan who provides protection to a small farming village, until the arrival of a mysterious ronin seeking his help causes his peaceful existence to descend into chaos. Tsukamoto’s first foray into samurai films stays true to the genre’s traits, whilst also flipping them on their head with moments of blistering intensity and ultraviolence. The score was composed by Chu Ishikawa, Tsukamoto’s long-term collaborator, who sadly passed away prior to the completion of this film.
