Expertly crafted by first-time narrative feature director Ondi Timoner (Dig,   We Live in Public), Mapplethorpe      chronicles the life and work of controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, from his humble beginnings in the iconic Chelsea Hotel and his mythicized relationship with Patti Smith, through his sexual awakening and meteoric rise as an artist and ubiquitous figure in the New York cultural scene of the 1970s and 80s. Matt Smith (Doctor WhoThe Crown) inhabits the steely ambition and mercurial nature of the man, whose wild talent and unabashed posturing forged his legacy as a photographic maverick and gay icon.
