A fascinating exploration into the philosophies of Milford Graves, the reknowned free-jazz percussionist who has played with such greats as Sonny Sharrock and Albert Ayler, amongst many others. Through Jake Meginsky and co-director Neil Young’s patient, insightful documentary, Graves shares with us his stories, thoughts and beliefs, from his development of his own martial arts style, to the sources of inspiration for his percussive style, direct from the rhythm of life itself. Using both new and archive footage, including some stunning live performances, this film is often meditative, often enlightening and always engrossing.
