Following the outstanding Ex Libris: The New York Public Library (CFF 2017), master documentarian Frederick Wiseman turns his focus on small-town America. Monrovia, Indiana depicts a region dominated by farming, the Christian church and sports, with Freemason rituals, chatter in gun shops and intense council debates. This is life in red state USA presented without comment or fuss, as viewers are left to make up their own minds about what they are seeing. Wiseman has had an incomparable, vital career that now spans over 50 years and shows no sign of letting up. As he continues to make films as brilliant as this, we should be grateful it doesn’t.
