The Philippines, 1987. Yael (Jana Agoncillo) is a compulsive eight-year-old, committed to a daily routine and obsessive about numbers. Her mother Val (Angge Santos) works hard in the shoe factory all day, insisting on 30 minutes of silence before speaking to her daughter when she gets home. Her father is away working in Saudi Arabia and he sends home cassette tapes in which he tells of how much he misses life back home. With her father’s voice as a soundtrack, Yael tries to interpret the adult world. Nervous Translation sweetly and strikingly depicts the curiosity and uncertainties of childhood.
