Jean Cocteau evocatively recreated the Greek myth of Orpheus on the Left Bank in post-war Paris; the result is one of the great enduring masterpieces of the French avant-garde. The chisel-jawed Jean Marais appears in the title role, a down-on-his-luck, once-famous poet who becomes obsessed with a mysterious black-clad princess (María Casares). In search of inspiration for his writing, he is compelled to follow her on a journey through a mirrored portal into the underworld. Newly restored, inventive optical effects and clever cinematic illusions enhance visual poetry and dreamlike storytelling that remain unsurpassed.
