As the Russian people celebrated the arrival of a new millennium on a snowy New Year’s Eve a deeper chill was gently rippling through the country as President Boris Yeltsin announced his resignation, clearing the way for Prime Minister Putin to assume the position of Acting President and subsequently the presidency. Employed to shoot a PR film for Putin’s election campaign, Vitaly Mansky saw close up the subtle ways Russia’s democracy was yielding to troubling Soviet principles. Dripping in intrigue, Putin’s Witnesses chronicles a masterclass of political manipulation and Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin’s remorseless resolve.
