Osamu (Lily Franky) is the head of a scavenging family living together in a cramped apartment. After a day stealing from supermarkets he comes across a little girl, Juri (Miyu Sasaki), who seems lonely and in need of affection. Osamu soon decides to take her into his home and train her in the art of shoplifting. Shifting notions of morality and concealment run through Hirokazu Kore-eda’s latest film, as he returns to themes around the nature of family which he has probed with such nuance and insight in the past. A heartening winner of this year’s Palme d’Or in Cannes, Shoplifters is Kore-eda on masterful form.
