German doctor Rike sets sail on a solo voyage to Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Having weathered a spectacular storm, she encounters a stricken fishing trawler full of desperate African refugees. She radios for help but it never comes. Unable to save the refugees with her small boat, she manages to rescue one boy (newcomer Gedion Odour Wekesa) but, faced with a tangible example of the West’s indifference towards the refugee crisis, Rike finds herself in an impossible situation. Susanne Wolff (Return to Montauk) gives a stand-out central performance in a grippingly shot, tense and timely drama.
