Oleg Afanasyev is a 10-year-old living in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. His village is barely a mile from the front line in the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war. Anti-aircraft fire and missile strikes soundtrack his existence, while school lessons are taken up with talk of bomb shelters and land mines rather than studies of maths and literature. While others have escaped the area, Oleg stays with his grandmother, his principal guardian since the death of his mother. Simon Lereng Wilmont’s exceptional observational documentary follows Oleg during a pivotal year in his development and is a valiant, valuable testament to the effects conflict has on children.
