Terror lurks around every corner in Ognjen Glavonić’s tense feature debut. Set during the 1999 NATO bombing of Serbia, truck driver Vlada – a working man who just wants to provide for his family – has been tasked with transporting a mysterious load across the war-scarred landscape from Kosovo to Belgrade. Part thriller, part dark political commentary and part elegy for a doomed younger generation who are the inheritors of the conflict’s legacy, The Load’s pleasures lie in its evocation of such tension-filled precursors as The Wages of Fear (1953) and Glavonić’s keen eye for rich incidental detail.
