Made for Swedish television, on a set that replicated an 18th-century theatre, Ingmar Bergman interprets Mozart’s opera in distinctive, sublime fashion. An audience sit, thrilled and enraptured, as the mythological tale of love and forgiveness is performed before them. Prince Tamino (Josef Köstlinger), accompanied by the genial Papageno (Håkån Hagegård), embarks on a quest to save beautiful princess Pamina (Irma Urrila), daughter of sinister high priest Sarastro (Ulrik Cold). One of the films selected for restoration to mark the great auteur’s centenary this year, The Magic Flute looks and sounds magnificent, its wit, warmth and intelligence evident throughout.
