Mila Turajlić’s personal portrait of her mother, Serbian academic and political activist Srbijanka Turajlic, and her resistance to Slobodan Milošević’s repressive and genocidal post-Yugoslav regime, raises political questions about the responsibility of each generation to fight for their future. Their Belgrade apartment, divided in two with a locked door, tells their family’s story and serves as a symbol of a country in political turmoil. Intimate conversations and family gatherings, interspersed with archive news footage, expose the tension between nationalism and progress in the former Yugoslavia. Shot prior to, and after, Serbia’s 2015 elections, present-day politics resound as strongly as the enduring force of the past.
