UK, mid-Eighties, and four men from Leeds burst onto the indie scene. Among them was a young songwriter called David Gedge, whose knack for penning honest, confessional lyrics was equalled only by his enthusiastic, breakneck-speed guitar strumming. At the tail end of 1987, Gedge and his band The Wedding Present released an album that would become the soundtrack to many an indie kid’s breakup, make-up and heartbreak for the next thirty-odd years, naming it after the football legend, George Best. Andrew Jezard’s documentary tells the story of the album’s creation, its lasting reverberations, and the story behind Gedge’s heartfelt songs.

There will be a post-screening Q&A with the director.
