Astra Taylor’s absorbing film challenges the complacent idea of democracy as we understand it today. Recognising it as ‘an ideal we’re reaching for’, Taylor journeys to the site of Plato’s Academy in Athens and reminds us that over 2,000 years ago the great philosopher was warning against demagogues and oligarchs. The past decade has seen the will of the Greek people subjugated by European banking interests, the rise of Trump and escalating inequality. Putting its own philosophical stress test on democracy, What is Democracy? calls upon a refreshing and lively cast of contributors such as Silvia Federici, Angela Davis and Cornel West.

There will be a post-screening Q&A with the director.
