Based on the life of Richard Wershe Jr, who was a teenager when recruited by US government agencies to infiltrate the drug scene in depressed Detroit, White Boy Rick evocatively depicts the 1980s underworld and features a break-out performance from Richie Merritt in the titular role. Matthew McConaughey is also terrific as Rick Snr, and it’s their father and son dynamic that is at the heart of the film’s drama. Yann Demange’s follow-up to the acclaimed Troubles actioner ’71 (2014) is a thrilling, muscular crime film that further affirms him as a confident and singular filmmaker capable of energising familiar genre tropes.
