Taking the deceptively simple form of a road movie, Bergman’s masterpiece touches on all the big issues – ageing, loneliness, redemption, regret – with the lightest of touches. Like Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol, a calcified man, long set in his cheerless ways, has a series of encounters, some in the form of shades, which prompt him to repent and reassess his ways. Innovative in its use of dream sequences and deft in its colliding of memory and reality, Wild Strawberries belies its director’s reputation as a morose and pessimistic filmmaker for its compassion and hopeful conclusion.
