First Take 2021
First Take is a training and development platform for newly established film professionals, film and media students and the wider film industry, which comprises case studies, presentations and panel discussions. Its intention is to promote fresh thinking amongst emerging and working filmmakers, inspiring them to be proactive in creating and promoting their own film work.
Sessions in 2021 focused on the casting process, the actor as a creator, audience design for film, and included a special case study on a new feature film from the 2021 Cork International Film Festival programme. The event took place online on Monday 15th November 2021 and was available for catch-up on the Cork International Film Festival online platform until the end of November 2021.
Doc Day Online 2021
Cork International Film Festival continues to develop its focus on high-quality Irish and international documentary cinema with Doc Day, connecting emerging and established non-fiction filmmakers with industry professionals and the wider documentary sector, with the objective of helping to inform, inspire and develop opportunities within the global documentary landscape.
Doc Day 2021 profiled a keynote presentation from US documentarian Dawn Porter, including a case study centred around the documentary feature film Lyra (screened at last year’s Festival), and explored subjects including the process of editing for feature documentary film.
The event took place online on Tuesday 16th November 2021 and was available for catch-up on the Cork International Film Festival online platform until the end of November 2021.
Doc Day Live 2021
In addition to the online offering for Doc Day 2021, Cork International Film Festival hosted an in-person documentary event and networking session in advance of the Documentary Gala Screening of Pat Collins’ new film ‘The Dance’ on Thursday 11th November 2021. The event provided an opportunity for players in the Irish documentary industry to meet and network after a long absence, and included a career interview with filmmaker Pat Collins.

Andrew Byrne, Project Manager with Screen Ireland, discussed Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland’s newly released strategy, with specific focus on how it relates to the documentary sector in Ireland.

Putting Irish Documentary on Global Screens
The global demand for content extends to all genres and the potential for Irish documentaries, of all types, to find new audiences is boundless. The question is how do Irish documentary makers access this growing demand for content, for both funding and distribution, while still making distinctively Irish stories for global audiences. The funding landscape is in flux, for cinema and TV releases, as funding agencies and public service media grapple with the changing marketplace.

Career Interview: Pat Collins
To coincide with the Documentary Gala screening of his new feature documentary The Dance, Cork filmmaker Pat Collins joined Doc Day for an in-depth interview about his filmmaking career.
A filmmaker with a long and distinguished body of work, Pat Collins has made over 30 films since his debut in 1999, and was recently elected to Aosdána. Works include the feature film Songs of Granite (2017), a portrait of Joe Heaney. Other films include; A Private World (2004), portrait of John McGahern; Tim Robinson: Connemara, (2011) a portrait of Tim Robinson and Taibhsi i mBeal Na Gaoithe, (2007) on Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, the award-winning feature film Silence (2012), and political feature essay films What We Leave in Our Wake (2009) and Living in a Coded Land (2014).
