Is it humankind’s greatest achievement? Twelve billion miles away a tiny spaceship is leaving our Solar System and entering the void of deep space. It is the first human-made object ever to do so.

Director and 2024 Arts Council Film Artist in Residence at UCC, Emer Reynolds, and the film’s producer Clare Stronge will participate in a post-screening ‘in-conversation’.

CORK ON CAMERA: IFI LOCAL FILMS FOR LOCAL PEOPLE

This new programme of work, from collections preserved in the IFI Irish Film Archive, includes a series of recently re-discovered Cork-themed films which provide a window onto the city and county in days gone by and further evidence of Cork’s rich amateur and professional film history.

KINGS OF SPADES

This British film chronicles the lives of the men who owned and worked in the Monard Ironworks in Co Cork which operated from 1790 to the early 1960s.

THE FILMS OF FRANK MORGAN

Frank Morgan, photographer, filmmaker and founder of the Rathcormac Film Unit, directed a series of award-winning short dramas featuring actors from Fermoy and environs in the 1970s and 1980s. The work is now preserved in the IFI Irish Film Archive.

A harrowing tale of 13-year-old Aoife who lives with her alcoholic father and takes care of him since her mother has left home. Featuring Marion Dowley and Richard Lee.

THE PROMISED LAND

When Nora and her family move to a 150 acre farm to help her husband’s sickly Uncle Tom, she sets her sights on inheriting the land. Featuring Geraldine Canning, Bill Canning, and Jim Carrig.

THE OTHER SIDE

A timid teenage babysitter encounters a rowdy motorcycle gang, and she and her infant charge are subjected to their cruel antics. Featuring Marion Dowley, Teresa O’Flynn and Máirín Morrish.

Sisterhood & Sanctuary is a Co-Creative film, a collaboration between Cork Migrant Centre, Saoirse Ethnic Hands On Deck, and Grey Heron Media.

Following the women and mothers who participate in activities at Cork Migrant Centre, their powerful and personal testimonies reveal the abundant creativity and indomitable spirit of these determined women who have established a thriving social enterprise, Saoirse EHD (Ethnic Hands on Deck). Saoirse, meaning “freedom” in Irish, reflects their aim to unlock the potential of migrant women to create beautiful products and foster a movement of empowerment, resilience, and solidarity. Their original designs reflect the joyful fusion of cultures, embodying the hope and determination that drive them.

BRÍAN CROTTY ART EXHIBITION & SCREENING

Visual artist Bríain Crotty presents a brand new film and art exhibition that unveils a new artistic language in which cinema and painting converge to explore the ephemeral nature of memory and the profound depths of the Irish experience.

DROP

Ireland | 2024 | 37 mins | Fiction

In a fusion of painting, animation, AI generation, and cinematic artistry, Drop follows the conversation between Noelle and Frank, where they grapple with the complexities of fragmented and traumatic memory and the interplay between dreams and reality.

The film’s narrative unfolds with a cinematic rhythm, challenging viewers to engage with the permanence of painted scenes and the ephemeral qualities of cinema.

Note: the 18:00 screenings incorporates a live performance
