Songs of Forgotten Trees
Two women, Thooya and Swetha, are brought together when Thooya sublets her apartment. Their lives could not be more different. Thooya dreams of an acting career whilst making a living as a sex worker, and Swetha is a quiet corporate call centre employee, working from home. In small rooms, hidden away from the chaotic Mumbai streets amongst so much urban loneliness, they seek connections where they rarely exist. Made on a shoestring budget by first-time director Anuparna Roy, Songs of Forgotten Trees is a tender tale of fragile kinship between two women. It is a testament to Roy’s artistry and determination that she recently became the first Indian filmmaker to win Best Director in Venice Film Festival’s Horizon competition.
