Arrested Memory
A seasoned detective becomes the unlikely target of cops and crooks alike after unwittingly wandering off with a multimillion-dollar ransom. As his increasingly unreliable memory makes it difficult to distinguish friend from foe, a seemingly straightforward case spirals into a strange, exhilarating game of cat and mouse.
Veteran Japanese cult filmmaker SABU brings his trademark blend of deadpan humour, kinetic energy and surreal twists to this offbeat crime caper, where sudden bursts of violence sit comfortably alongside moments of tenderness and absurdity. With its eccentric characters, unpredictable turns and gleefully skewed sense of justice, Arrested Memory is a crime thriller that repeatedly refuses to behave like one.
Playful, stylish and just a little unhinged, the film showcases SABU’s singular ability to find humour and humanity in characters caught between confusion and chaos. It’s a wonderfully unpredictable ride, balancing suspense, comedy and melancholy right through to its delightfully unexpected conclusion.
Arrested Memory was a hot ticket in Venice and Toronto's Midnight Madness, and received a whopping 11 Golden Horse nominations (Taiwan's Oscars), with the winners to be announced on November 22.
